Today’s stitched sample comes from my new Stitch Concept, Moon Dance by Sandra Gilmore. It uses a single strand of Impressions (gray lines) and Glisten (aqua lines). It’s a great stitch to add direction to an area. In this case, it’s the path. The original post shows a slightly heavier version for a background.

Cousins are Great

Today’s stitch comes from my friends at Aristeia in Santa Monica. I spotted this stitch and thought it was this stitch. It’s a very close cousin and, honestly, I wish I had thought of this variation myself.

The stitched sample used two plies of DMC Floche (black lines) and a Kreinik metallic on 18-mesh. It was a sky on a cute little Vicky Sawyer piece. I think it would make a wonderful solid background on any number of florals. My favorite thread combo for backgrounds is a single strand silk perle, such as Elegance or Grandeur, for the black lines and an appropriate metallic for the aqua lines. If I want the metallic to pop, I go with a Kreinik. For a more subtle accent, consider Rainbow Gallery Flair or Silk Lame.

Consider flipping it 90° for beautiful columns for wallpaper or a floor. I would use a Soie D’Alger for the black lines and Neon Rays for the aqua lines. It will also make a fantastic ground cover, especially for beautifully shaded snow. For the snow, use white Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) for the black lines and white Flair for the aqua lines. The shading will show through both of those threads and it’s a beautiful effect.

Hello Spring?

Today’s stitch is from a beautiful Mary Lake Thompson Autumn Leaves bouquet. This green thread combo leaves me aching for Spring.

The stitched sample uses ThreadWorx Floss (black lines), Silk Lame (yellow lines), and Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) (turquoise lines) on 13-mesh. It’s a wildly open stitch, which means I love it. (Oh, and the stitch on the gold leaf can be found here.)

Clearly (no pun intended), this stitch is great for a beautifully shaded area or a solid area that you want to add interest to, but not overwhelm with pattern. It would be great for a large tree, a beautiful dress, or a solid background. You could use the same threads for the tree or use a single strand silk such as Vineyard Silk or Pepper Pot Silk (black lines), Very Velvet (turquoise lines), and Silk Lame (yellow lines). A beautiful thread combo for a dress stitch would be Soie D’Alger (black lines), Trebizond Silk (turquoise lines), and Entice (yellow lines). 

Consider adding a cluster of Brick Beading in place of the Upright Cross (yellow lines). You could add diagonal stitches over one or two lines coming from the four corners to the shared center where the diamonds meet. Consider leaving the diamond empty for a more open stitch. Have fun with it and let us know what you did with it. It could be a future #stitchingsunday.

Today's stitch comes from a blue and cream striped and more pillow. (The stitch for the blue stripes was featured last year.) I added the blue accent to the cream stripe to augment the adjacent blue stripes. The stitched sample uses Elegance (dark gray lines), Petite Silk Lame (aqua lines), and Sundance Beads with clear beading thread.

This stitch would make a gorgeous roof or floor. I love the filled centers. You could do them all in the same direction. However, I am drawn to the interest the different directions add. If a bead isn’t your style, consider adding your favorite 2X2 stitch in the center of the open square. This link offers several other 2X2 ideas.

A lightweight thread combinations for a floor include DMC Perle Cotton (gray lines), Bella Lusso Wool (aqua lines), and a matte finish seed bead. I would use Glisten (gray lines), Vineyard Silk (aqua lines), and an Upright Cross for the center of the squares in Flair for a roof.

My Favorite Day of the Year

The day after Christmas is my favorite day of the year. Seriously. It’s calm. There’s a lingering glow from the month+ of holiday activities and months of prep. There’s no rush because we still have New Year’s to look forward to. It’s the perfect day to de-stress and stitch. And here’s a stitch for that spot you weren’t quite sure what to do with.

It’s that “just right” stitch, if you will, as it falls precisely in between a small Alternating Cashmere and the larger version. The stitched sample uses Impressions and Neon Rays+ on 18-mesh. It’s an easy full coverage stitch with a zillion applications. This stitch, or either of its cousins, are great for backgrounds, baskets, floors, walls. I love the symmetry and elegance of it.

For backgrounds on 18 mesh, I would use silk Perle, such as Elegance, for the gray lines and my favorite metallic such as Kreinik Metallics Tapestry Braid (#12) or Entice for the aqua lines. For a basket, I recommend an overdyed wool (Lorikeet or ThreadWorx), with a more subtle metallic such as Flair or Silk Lame. I love the smoothness of silk floss for walls. Pair it with a Neon Rays to enhance the smooth finish. Mix two matte threads for a rustic floor, such as Rainbow Linen and a Burmilana Tweed.

Sweet Surprise

One reason I am drawn to seasonal needlepoint is it gets put away, forgotten about, and brought out a year later. It’s an early Christmas for me every year because there is always (at least) one pillow I completely forgot I had. Today’s stitch comes from this year’s version of just that pillow. The stitched sample uses Splendor (gray lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (black and aqua lines). I recommend stitching the 2X4 rectangles first, as they are all connected so it will be easy to navigate. Follow up with the center square and finish with the Smyrna Crosses in the 2X2 squares. To dress it up, consider replacing the Smyrna Crosses with beads or a single larger bead, such as a 3-4mm pearl.

This is an elegant, full-coverage stitch that will work well for clothing and bags. If you want to dress up the clothing, consider replacing the Smyrna Crosses with four beads or a single larger bead, such as a 3-4 mm pearl. It would work well for many architectural elements, such as a roof, wallpaper, or flooring. To add richness to any architectural element, consider adding a third thread in a darker color for the Smyrna Crosses.

A Classic

There might be few things more holiday classic than deep red poinsettias sprinkled with snow. Even I, a 4th generation (snow-less) Californian, know how classic this is. And voila!

Today’s #stitchingsunday is Alternating Nobuko from my Debbie Mumm Poinsettia Stitch Guide. It uses two shades of Splendor and Trebizond Silk. I used to avoid Nobuko as it frequently vexed me. (Okay, and made me swear, I confess.) It clicked for me when I saw the stitch as vertical columns of diagonal stitches over three rows, skipping a row in between. That may seem obvious to some, but it is what got me over the hump with this stitch. I now love it. There are so many wonderful variations that can really pop on a piece.

Every year around this time, I pull out the holiday pillow with today’s stitch. I love this really simple stitch and the color combo always calms me. It’s really quite lovely. I hope you enjoy it!

The stitched sample uses Pepper Pot Silk and Kreinik Metallics Medium Braid (#16) on 18-mesh on a the equivalent of a sampler pillow. It was really fun to simply stitch color blocks versus objects.

It’s a great all-purpose full coverage stitch. It would make great clothing, especially pants or boots. Consider using a lighter weight thread for the gray lines, such as a size 8 (or lighter) silk Perle or 2-3 plies of Soie D’Alger so more of the metallic shines through on either of those combinations. This is also a great stitch for oh so many architectural applications. Consider it for a roof with two shades of Vineyard Silk. Try it for a wall with a size 8 Perle Cotton for the aqua lines and Petite Silk Lame for the gray lines.

I Hope You Like Red

Today’s stitch is a wonderful and bright explosion of red, one of the most traditional holiday colors. Red also happens to be overly represented in my shoe and purse collection. So, I’m not exactly impartial when it comes to this color.

Today's stitch comes from a Raymond Crawford holiday pillow. The blocks of color drew me to the pillows as they lent themselves to fun stitches. The red block in the stitched sample uses Elegance and Flair (on 18-mesh). I used two colors to illustrate the alternating Byzantine patterns to help you navigate the stitch. I’m not going to lie; it was a challenge to catch a groove on this stitch. That said, I love the end result and the swearing and pulling out was completely worth it.

I would love to see this stitch on a floor or roof with Elegance (for the black and gray lines) and an overdyed something for the yellow 3X3 squares. It really doesn’t matter if it’s wool, silk floss, or metallic overdyed. I love the combo of matte and overdyed.

It works well in almost any area you want to draw attention to, especially clothing or a holiday bag. Play with it. It could be almost subtle with a silk floss and Entice. You could really draw attention to it with Petite Very Velvet for the black and gray lines partnered with an overdyed ThreadWorx metallic for the yellow lines. Consider beading the 3X3 squares to really go over the top.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on how to integrate additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!
